Regina Deitz, Lorain first-grade teacher, local International Reading Association officer


Regina Lynn Deitz, who taught at Lorain elementary schools and served as an officer for state and local chapters of the International Reading Association, died July 1, 2009, at age 59. She had been diagnosed with cancer in October 2006.

She taught first grade at Meister Road Elementary School for 27 years and Longfellow Elementary School for five years before retiring in 2004.

During her retirement, Regina volunteered to read to kindergarteners at St. Joseph Catholic School in Amherst. She also volunteered at St. Joseph Church as a Eucharistic minister, Sunday collection counter and office volunteer.

She was president of the local Daniel T. Gardner Council of the International Reading Association for 20 years. She also was a member of the organization’s Ohio Council. She belonged to the Lorain, Ohio and Northeastern Ohio education associations.

The lifelong Amherst resident graduated from Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst in 1967. She received an associate’s degree from Lorain County Community College. She held a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in elementary education and reading from Bowling Green State University.

Regina coached the Yearling softball team in the Amherst Athletic Association’s Pony League for several summers. She bowled with the Happy Bunch Thursday Afternoon Bowling League and Monday Night Ladies Bowling League at Rebman’s Recreation Center in Lorain. She golfed with the Cherry Ridge Thursday Ladies Golf League and attended Cleveland Indians games with friends.

She also belonged to the Senior Citizens of Amherst, Catholic Golden Agers, Amherst American Legion Auxiliary and Amherst Democratic Women's Club. She was an associate member of the Amherst Women's League.

Survivors include her mother Marjorie “Marge” of Amherst; brothers, John H. ( wife, Catherine) and James E. (his wife, Laura), both of Amherst, and Gregory M. (wife, Monica) of Lorain; sister, Suzanne M. Carstensen (husband, Kenneth) of Amherst. Her father, Harry Edward Deitz, died April 8, 1992.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2009, at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing prayers will be offered at 9:30 a..m Monday, July 6, 2009, at the funeral home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst.
