Gregory E. Hawkins, Cuyahoga County social service agency employee


Gregory Edward Hawkins, who held a supervisory position with the Cuyahoga County Department of Job and Family Services, died July 2, 2009, four weeks before what would have been his 62nd birthday.

The 61-year-old Bedford, Ohio, resident was born July 30, 1947 in Cleveland.

He graduated from West Geauga High School and the University of Akron.

Hawkins was an active member of Spelman Chapel A.M.E. Church in Kent, Ohio.

He coached Kent Suburban Youth Football and also coached baseball in Kent for many years. He served as a scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 257 in Kent.

Survivors include his sons, Dean of Kent and Zane of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; girlfriend, Fanette Merrett of Stow, Ohio; ex-wife, Dee Hawkins of Kent; brothers, Charles of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Christopher of Ravenna, Ohio; sisters, Stephanie (Jerry) Pizer of Baltimore , Md., Diane (Paul) Eggert of Crofton, Md., Pam Bozica of Kent and Leigh (Pete) Barber of Statesboro, Ga.; mother, Bernita (LaLiberte' Daigneaux) Hawkins of Kent; and granddaughter, Aubrey Hawkins of Kent.

Family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. memorial services Monday, July 6, 2009, at Kent United Church of Christ, 1400 East Main, Kent, Ohio.

Arrangements are by Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory in Kent.
