James A. Berthold, 76, served on Amherst and Lorain County JVS school boards


James A. Berthold, 76, who served on the Amherst, Ohio, and Lorain County Joint Vocational school boards for many years, died Friday, July 24, 2009.

The JVS Board of Education renamed its board scholarship the Jim Berthold Board Scholarship in his honor in 2006.

Mr. Berthold retired in 2006 after 31 years as a teacher at EHOVE (Erie, Huron, Ottawa Vocational Education).

The Elyria, Ohio, native served in the Air Force during the Korean War after graduating from Amherst High School in 1951.

He received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Toledo in 1979 and a master’s in education from Kent State University in 1982.

Besides teaching at the vocational school, Mr. Berthold was a CCD teacher at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst for 20 years and served as a Boy Scout leader for 15 years.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra, and their 11 children: David of San Antonio, Texas, Donald, Douglas, Daryl and Jennifer, all of Amherst, Daniel of Atlanta, Ga., Jean Culp and Dale, both of Elyria, Judith Scholl of Lawton, Okla., Janet DiLucianno and Jane Hamilton, both of Lorain.

Mr. Berthold also is survived by 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Rosemary Shook of Elyria and Maryann of Lorain.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2009, at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.

Closing prayers will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 27, 2009, at the funeral home followed by 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst.
